On April 4th, Dr. Daryl R. Ireland (Boston University) and Dr. Alex R. Mayfield (Asbury University) gave the third CHCD lecture series of Spring 2023 entitled “Testing the Claim: The Sino-Foreign Protestant Enterprise as a Women’s Movement”.
In her influential essay 2006 essay, Dana L. Robert made the case for “World Christianity as a Women’s Movement.” Although she lacked statistical evidence, Robert believed she could mount a convincing argument. Almost two decades later, it is finally possible to check some of her arguments and conclusions against quantifiable data. In this lecture, Alex Mayfield and Daryl Ireland use the China Historical Christian Database to test whether Protestant Christianity in China was, in fact, a women’s movement.
